12 Principles to Live By

Perspective, Uncategorized

This past weekend I had the privilege and honor to complete a young man’s application for Eagle Scout.  I have known this young man for 18 years, since his birth.  It has been wonderful for me to see him grow into a responsible, caring, trustworthy and self-less person.  As part of the application process, I received a copy of the “Boy Scout Law” and the 12 character principles in which they strive to live.  No wonder many Eagle Scouts become leaders in business and why it helps in the college admission process.

It occurred to me that our community, our businesses, our country, our government, our world would be more peaceful and responsible if we all lived by these principles which I am sharing below.  I have replaced “Scout” with “Citizen” and he/she/his/her refers to both sexes.

I invite you to dream with me a little about a world where everyone lives by these principles.  If we can see it we can get there.  It starts in our own heart, followed by our own actions.  I bet a lot of prayers would be answered too.  Prayers Work.

TRUSTWORTHY:  A Citizen tells the truth.  He keeps his promises.  Honesty is part of his code of conduct.  People can depend on him.

LOYAL:  A Citizen is true to her family.  Parents, friends, school and nation.

HELPFUL: A Citizen is concerned about other people.  He does things willingly for others without pay or reward.

FRIENDLY: A Citizen is a friend to all.  She is a sister to other Citizens.  She seeks to understand others.  She respects those with ideas and customs other than her own.

COURTEOUS:  A Citizen is polite to everyone regardless of age or position.  He knows good manners and makes it easier for people to get along together.

KIND: A Citizen understands there is strength in being gentle.  She treats others as she wants to be treated.  She does not hurt or kill harmless things without reason.

OBEDIENT: A Citizen follows the rules of his family, school, and community.  He obeys the laws of his community and country.  If he thinks these rules and laws are unfair, he tries to have them changed in an orderly manner rather than disobey them.

CHEERFUL: A Citizen looks for the bright side of things.  She cheerfully does tasks that come her way.  She tries to make others happy.

THRIFTY: A Citizen works to pay his way and to help others.  He saves for unforeseen needs.  He protects and conserves natural resources.  He carefully uses time and property.

BRAVE: A Citizen can face danger even if she is afraid.  She has the courage to stand for what she thinks is right even if others laugh at or threaten her.

CLEAN: A Citizen keeps his body and mind fit and clean.  He goes around with those who believe in living by these same ideas.  He helps keep his home and community clean.

REVERENT: A Citizen is reverent toward God.  She is faithful in her religious duties.  She respects the beliefs of others.
